Happy Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, and birthday to me!

Happy almost Cinco de Mayo everybody! Actually, May is full of holidays! We’ve got Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day. (And my birthday, in case you were wondering 😉) In this fun month, don’t you wonder what started all these holidays and events? I’ve been doing some research and these origins are pretty cool.

Most of us know that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s celebration of a war victory back in 1862. And in 2024, it’s an excuse to eat too much El Jarrito. Then we have Mother’s Day history, which is a little more complicated. In ancient Europe, every 4th Sunday of Lent was a time when faithful Christians would return to their “mother church” which was the most dominant church in the area. Then over time, we began focusing on our own mothers and presenting them with gifts and flowers. Finally, Memorial Day is an American holiday where we honor those who have fought and died for our country. During this time, many people decorate soldiers’ graves with flowers and sentimental items.

    Happy May everybody!!
