The History Of Homecoming
The fall season is not only a time for pumpkins, but it’s also time for one of the most fun and historic events– homecoming! For high school students, college students, and alumni alike, homecoming is one of the main events of the year. The game, the dance, the court, the pep rallies, and the events make it a blast for everyone involved. As long lasting as homecoming has been, no one ever really stops and thinks about how it started and what it’s really meant for.
Homecoming originated at the collegiate level. The “homecoming” game was the start of the football season, and all of the alumni would return to their school. Many schools have claimed they started the homecoming idea, and while we know that it began in the early 1900s, the school who came up with the idea is not official. Over the years, it became wildly popular and events like dances, parades, and a court became included. Eventually, homecoming was not just gameday, but spread over an entire week, giving us the Homecoming of today!
