The Origin of Our Shopping Day
Yesterday was the famous Black Friday. Some of the best deals of the year! I got a whole new set of sheets for $25–what a steal! But the purpose of Black Friday is actually a lot more complicated than a post-Thanksgiving shopping spree. So many speculations surround the term and its purpose. But, among much research into the event and all the myths, I’ve finally found the true story behind it all.
Back in the 1950s is when the term was more than likely first used. The day after Thanksgiving was always so busy, and police used the term to describe the hustle and bustle. It stuck, and around the 1980’s, the term started to become contagious and spread across the nation. When nationalized, many retailers began to say that the reason for the term was to describe how a store went from “in the red” to “the black.” This story is most believed around the country now, even though that’s not the real origin.
