Landscaping Through Time!

Remember when everyone carried around Stanley water bottles? Ugh, now that is so 6 months ago! Or maybe when low-rise jeans were all the rage? I don’t know about you, but I haven’t seen anyone strutting those lately!!

With anything in life, there are trends. A lot of times when we think of “trendy” we think of the latest fashions, hairstyles, and accessories; especially with the help of social media. But, there are so many elements of life that have gone through trends that we don’t always think about.

One being landscaping trends! It’s easy to see the fads of house design, and we can often estimate the time period of a home just by its looks. But landscaping is often something that people overlook.

In the early 1900s, having a very colorful garden was very popular. People were planting lilies, poppies, lilacs, and irises. World War I influenced those lawns even further when “Victory Gardens” came into light. Having a beautiful garden, full of flowers and food-yielding plants, was a way to show our American pride and perseverance during a tough time!

Fast forward, in the 1970s house plants quickly became part of the decade. In recent years, we have re-adopted this trend, putting house plants, succulents, and air plants in every corner of our homes. The obsession was just as real back in the 70s! But by the 2000s and 2010s, we were very experimental with edible plants. People were trading out shrubs and ornamental plants for a more useful landscape.

Today, it’s common to see homes reverting back to those 1970s trends. Specifically, succulents and air plants are the thing. Also, unlike those Victory Gardens of the early 20th century, people are putting less focus on bright colors and more focus on interesting leafage!

Which trend suits you?!
