May at last!

Happy summer everyone! Busy life is winding down. I don’t know about y’all, but I plan to have a to-do list full of nothing! After the rain we’ve had, I am so happy to welcome this beautiful weather and sunshine. This coming Monday is Memorial Day. The perfect hamburger and hotdog day! But do you know how Memorial Day got started? You know what it’s about? Well I’m so glad you asked because I happen to know ;)

Memorial Day is exactly its name– a day of memorial towards those who have fought and died for our country. It occurs every year on the last Monday in May. The cool thing about Memorial Day is that it was originally called Decoration Day and dates back to the years following the Civil War. People would take the last day to place flowers and decorations on memorial sites and graveyards. Then, in 1971, it was officially declared a national holiday and named “Memorial Day”.

So, when you’re out enjoying those get-togethers and delicious food, don’t forget what Memorial Day truly means. Let us always remember those who sacrificed themselves to keep our country alive and free!
