Cold winter days like we’re having right now make you want to just curl up with a book by the fire! Not to mention, the weather is forecasting snow towards the end of this week. Now, as my fellow Louisianans know, our labile weather could make this chance disappear. But, the temperatures below freezing are here to stay!
So, aside from turning on your fireplace and plugging in that heated blanket, there are actually many steps you can take to protect your home from the icy cold outside. Many homeowners don’t take the proper precautions during extreme weather and reap the consequences. But, that’s why I’m here to give you some noteworthy tips to ensure your house is set for snow!
One thing you can do is cut the power to your AC. It seems like a no-brainer, but your compressor could be seriously damaged if it clicks on in low temperatures. Speaking of compressors, it is advised that homeowners cover their compressor with a piece of plywood just as an extra layer of protection. Another tip is to unhook all water hoses! When a water hose is connected to a spigot, it actually traps water inside. Then, low temperatures come in and freeze that trapped water, leading to bursts spigtos, hoses, and possibly even pipes!! One more tip is to check on your attic ventilation. It is always good to keep a watch on this anyway, but it’s especially important to make sure it is working properly when winter is settling in.
I hope you found these tips helpful and that you put them to good use! Step up in your home-care this season with more than just the perfect batch of hot chocolate. Stay warm, guys!!
