Snow Day Precautions
Old Man Winter has struck again! While I thoroughly enjoyed having a few days off to drink coffee by the fire with some beautiful scenery, with sub freezing temperatures comes the stress of making sure your facilities don’t get damaged. We’ve had to take many precautions over these last few days. What about you? Did you take steps to prepare for the weather? Here are some tips from the Martin Presence Group to keep your house protected next time we get a snow day! (or week)
One of the first things you need to do in freezing weather is cover all outside faucets. In addition to this, keep all inside faucets dripping. Also, keep all cabinets with pipes inside open, especially at night. Lastly, you can insulate all exposed, exterior pipes. One idea is to use hay as it is a natural insulator and covering outside pipes with it is a nice and easy way to preserve. A pipe that freezes, cracks, then bursts can release hundreds of gallons of water per second and create a very, very expensive home repair. Wrapping your pipes with inexpensive foam insulation is a very easy DIY project, and should be done before temperatures begin to drop.
Whether you love or hate winter, we are here to help you and your home be safe, so you can enjoy more time on the sled!
